Epsom Derby Meeting 2009

The Epsom Derby is this weekend and betting is hotting for one of the most prestigious flat thoroughbred horse races in the world

Epsom Derby betting at Sky Bet has picked up considerable momentum in the past week and there’s no better place to bet on the Derby than at Sky Bet.

Derby betting is led by Fame and Glory, who is currently the ante-post favourite at 11/4. Fame and Glory is trained by Aiden O’Brien and it had an impressive victory at the notable trial the Ballysax Stakes, and the suggestion from Ballydoyle is that the son of Montjeu has inherited the star quality his father possessed. Although pulling hard, Johnny Murtagh always had Fame and Glory in a good position and he stayed on well to beat a useful field. Fame and Glory is also ridden by Kieran Fallon, the greatest Epsom jockey since Lester Piggott, which certainly bodes well.

The next favourite in the Epsom Derby betting come in the form of Sea the Stars, at 3/1 with Sky Bet, who was a brilliant winner at the 2,000 Guineas recently. He is thought to be a fine horse, with pace and a great temperament. But no horse has won the 2,000 Guineas and the Derby since Nashawan twenty years ago, and before that Nijinsky in 1970 who won the Triple Crown. It therefore represents a daunting task for Sea the Stars.

Epsom Derby betting on Crowded House at the end of last year with Sky Bet had seen enough interest to make Brian Meehan’s runner the 6/1 joint favourite. After finishing an excellent second in a valuable sales race at Newmarket, he cemented his place at the head of the market when bolting up in the Racing Post Trophy which is regarded as an excellent trial for the Epsom Derby. However, he has fallen away remarkably and is now a 25/1 shot, after he was a disappointing eighth behind Black Bear Island in last month’s Dante Stakes at York. It is now apparent that Crowded House is suffering from a respiratory infection, and there are concerns over whether he will run at all at the Derby.

Sky Bet is also offering Epsom Derby betting specials, including a number of betting options on whether the winner will be trained by Aiden O’Brien. O’Brien trains six of the thirteen competitors, including the favourite Fame and Glory and third favourite Rip Van Winkle, so many will certainly fancy one of his horses to prevail.

Sky Bet are offering a non-runner money back guarantee on both the Epsom Derby and Oaks
